Neuroscience-Based Approach to Improve Learning

The Marshall Learning Center offers free, engaging lessons that promote children’s education and well-being through research-based neuroscience principles. The program includes activities for parents and caregivers, fostering stronger family connections. Operated under the nonprofit Marshall Hope Corporation, the center is dedicated to supporting children who speak other languages at home by providing consistent programming tailored to their needs.

To achieve this mission, we have developed a comprehensive program built on collaboration with businesses, nonprofits, educational institutions, and private citizens. While some partners and teachers are paid, the majority of our efforts are driven by passionate volunteers.

Our programs provide a safe and nurturing environment designed to expand horizons and create opportunities for children to thrive.

Need: To further enhance our program, we need to hire additional teachers and secure a better space to support our students and their families effectively. Please let us know if you would like to brainstorm possibilities!

New Paragraph

Our History

History

After its establishment as a nonprofit organization, Marshall Hope Corporation brought on Tatiana J. Klein to expand its services with a comprehensive educational program tailored to the immigrant community. With 17 years of experience in children’s after-school programs, Klein played a pivotal role in launching the Marshall Learning Center, building on the success of the existing ESL adult education program at Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Recognizing the value of parents and children learning together, the center offers a family-centered approach to education.

The learning center opened its doors in 2022 with 35 students and has since grown to serve 54 students, with numbers steadily increasing. These students, who attend various public schools in Anne Arundel County, benefit from free, high-quality educational programs. Marshall Learning Center aims to develop leadership skills among its students, with alumni now returning to assist with the programs. Program Director Klein has volunteered her time without a salary, ensuring that resources are directed toward hiring skilled teachers.

The center’s impact extends beyond academics. Students have performed at venues such as the Annapolis Mayor’s Office, events hosted by the County Executive Office, and community gatherings like Día de los Muertos at Maryland Hall. Their artwork has been displayed at the Historic Annapolis Museum and Maryland Hall. Students have also participated in initiatives with the Anne Arundel County Police, Annapolis Maritime Museum, Tennis Alliance, Arundel Rivers Association, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, among others. These experiences include swimming, canoeing, chess, coding, STEM projects, mathematics, writing, and book clubs, enriching their academic and personal growth.

Program Director Klein has successfully placed students in prestigious schools with full scholarships, including St. Anne’s Middle School, Key School, Indian Creek, and Severn School. Several graduates are now attending college and others are already working after college. The consistent success of its students has led schools like St. Anne’s and the Key School to actively seek recommendations from the center, acknowledging its role in preparing students to excel academically and as future leaders.

The Marshall Learning Center is supported by a diverse and talented team, including a Special Education teacher, a graduate and two students from St. John’s College. The center sometimes benefits from volunteers from nearby high schools. During the summer, the center hires college students from prestigious institutions like MIT, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown University, University of Maryland, and Cornell University, along with high school students.

For our older students, the program offers guidance and resources for pursuing higher education, whether at a two-year community college or a four-year university.

Marshall Learning Center is proud to have students enrolled or graduated from Anne Arundel Community College, Dartmouth College, University of Maryland, UMBC, Boston College, and York College.

The center’s focus on mentorship and academic support has been instrumental in helping students achieve their educational goals and dreams.

Together, we are creating a world where every child can thrive and succeed, no matter their background or circumstances.

Thank You:  Your belief in our mission makes it all possible. With your support, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children. Thank you for helping us build a brighter future!
